The Usui
System of Reiki is named after its founder, Dr. Mikao
Usui. Relying on an oral history, we know that Dr. Usui
was an educator in Kyoto in the late 1800's. He began an
investigation into the healing phenomena of history's
greatest spiritual teachers. Through travel, study,
research, and meditation, he developed the healing
practice of Reiki and spent the rest of his life
applying and teaching this method.
Usui's
work continued in pre-war Tokyo at a clinic run by
Chujiro Hayashi. A patient, Mrs. Hawayo Takata of
Hawaii, recovered from her serious ailments at Hayashi's
Reiki clinic, and became his first known western
student. She practiced and taught throughout the US and
Canada from 1937 to her death in 1980. Her
granddaughter, Phyllis Furumoto now carries on her work.
Today millions of people practice Reiki throughout the
world.
The Reiki Alliance is an international
association of Reiki Masters. Members of the Reiki Alliance make
a commitment to teach and practice the traditional form of Usui
Shiki Ryoho and have received their teaching through the direct
lineage of Mikao Usui, Chujiro Hayashi, Hawayo Takata, and
Phyllis Lei Furumoto. While masters differ in personal style,
when you decide to choose a Reiki Master who has been selected
as a member of The Reiki Alliance, you are assured the highest
quality of Reiki teaching and Reiki treatment, in the ancient
true tradition of Reiki.
